Making Things Work Better, One bit At A Time

Hope this email finds you well.

I haven’t been sending many emailers out since I’ve been contributing to the Open Source Technical University at www.lovemytool.com and basically swamped with work.

I am quite surprised with the number of sites that have been popping up offering free tutorials and advice. All of these are free and ‘Tony approved’ (I have no idea that that means, but thought it would add some creditability).

The OSTU on the lovemytool site has many technology topics that Tim and Denny are assembling as a point of reference. As well as the technical info, Denny must have his own jet or something since he seems to be at every major event with his video camera in hand.

I’m also guessing that Denny must have some good contacts, or a laundry list of dirty little secrets to get interviews with everyone from the tech-head in the trenches to the pie in the sky big wigs. And not to be outdone, Tim doesn’t hold anything back when he posts his rants, the only way Tim can.

To date I’ve submitted Quickstarts covering iperf, MRTG and Wireshark. I’m just finishing the next one which should be out next week.

Of course the list below is in no particular order and I’m sure about it from my colleagues.

Laura Chappell has started assembling a great reference page on the least likely place; a training website. In this case on the Wireshark University page. Go check it out at http://www.wiresharktraining.com/bitspitters.html

And of course Laura has been contributing her ‘Animated Articles’ to Novell’s connection magazine forever. Ok, maybe not forever, but at least for the last 2 years. You can find these articles at http://www.novell.com/connectionmagazine/laurachappell.html

Mike Pennachi has put together a website with good information. I’m sure of the origin of the name for the site and will ask Mike the next time I get a chance. His site is at http://nickandmack.com You can also find tips at Mike’s corporate site http://new.networkprotocolspecialists.com/resources/

And of course how could I finish without mentioning Scott Haugdahl from www.bitcricket.com If writing is a skill, then Scott must hold

several black belts in writing. Scott has always had a way of getting you interested and somehow sneaks in information along the way. If you haven’t read Scott’s material, you got to check it out at http://thenetworkguy.typepad.com/nau

Since I’ve been writing more, I can appreciate how difficult it is to put something concise together and making some time to do it.

I don’t want to make this sound like a ‘love-in’, so I’ll stop there.

Downloads;

- Wireshark is out with 1.01. Simple; go get it!!! www.wireshark.org

- CPORTS is one of my favorite portable apps that will display what application is using which TCP/UDP port and the

location of that software http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html

- HFS HTTP File Server is becoming a valuable utility in my tool box. It is a portable, free and very powerful web server.

You can change the port number and limit the bandwidth.

As always, I encourage your ideas or comments.

Cheers,
